Setting up and administering your classroom web server

Mitel Networks SME server (formerly known as E-Smith Servers) are dedicated old PCs (like Dell Optiplexes) that are running modified free Linux server software and that excel as intranet web servers and electronic storage areas. Ideal for Web Design classes, video storage, school-based web pages, computer clubs, InteGrade and teacher backups, etc.

Since this choice involves using network resources and a dedicated PC, it is best to work through your Campus Technology Committee and have the support of your Principal. In essence, you learn how to set up an intranet server, learn about file and user permissions and attributes and then practice creating users and uploading the web pages that you or your students have created via FTP.
