E-Smith servers

Setting up a Mitel Networks SME server (formerly known as E-smith Servers) requires a dedicaded old PC (like Dell Optiplexes) so that it can run modified free Linux server software. Such servers excel as intranet web servers and electronic storage areas in any network. They are ideal for Web Design classes, video storage, school-based web pages, computer clubs, InteGrade and teacher backups, etc.

Because it involves a network device, both the Principal and the Campus Technology Committee should be involved in the decision to have an SME server. Folks who are enrolled or have completed the Technology Masters program at UTEP and want to continue with their "hands on" professional development are encouraged to contact Alan Hodson, who will help them set up the server, train them with its configuration and help them set up accounts and permissions so that they can practice uploading via standard FTP protocols (instead of Learning Village protocols) - There are several schools using these servers, and they love the ease of use.
